This is not a real client. It is a worked example of a hybrid cannabis retailer in Stamford on Eversource Rate 30 that treated a high delivery bill as a usage problem until a rate review showed per-kW demand charges and Standard Service generation as separate levers, then fixed supply before the January Standard Service reset.

This case study describes a representative Eversource dispensary built from public tariff data and labeled assumptions. It is not a real client, and the savings figures are modeled, not measured.
The facility and starting situation
Assume a hybrid cannabis retailer in Stamford on an Eversource account in ISO New England [ct-pura-choose-supplier]. Connecticut licensed 80 retail credentials combined across adult-use retailers and medical hybrid facilities as of September 2026 [ct-credential-count]. This store is a 5,100-square-foot ground-floor suite with a secure vestibule, open sales floor, two consult rooms, and a vault.
The load stack is typical retail: LED display and accent lighting, a 25-ton rooftop HVAC unit, 24-hour security, and three reach-in refrigerators. Connecticut averages 5,849 heating degree days and 607 cooling degree days, with coastal dew points in the upper 60s to low 70s F from late June through August [noaa-cag-connecticut]. The RTU runs continuously from mid-June through September.
Peak demand reads 55 kW in July interval data. The account sits on Eversource Rate 30 Small General Service, maximum demand under 200 kW [eversource-ct-rates-2026]. The operator took Standard Service generation and never split the bill into delivery demand vs supply lines. When the August bill arrived at $2,450, the store manager blamed foot traffic, not rate class.
What the baseline bills showed
The table separates cited Rate 30 charges from assumed usage. Dollar totals are inputs.

Annualized: roughly 156,000 kWh and about $37,800 a year. At the EIA June 2026 Connecticut commercial average of 19.62 cents per kWh applied to the same usage, the stack would cost about $30,600 on a pure average-rate basis [eia-epm-5-6-a]. Connecticut runs well above the US commercial average of 14.19 cents [eia-epm-5-6-a] because delivery demand on Rate 30 adds fixed dollars that average-rate math hides.
Delivery demand was the surprise. At 55 kW peak, transmission demand alone was $680 a month before generation [eversource-ct-rates-2026]. The operator had focused on kWh because the sales floor lights run 14 hours a day. Demand charges do not care about hours; they care about the highest 15-minute interval.
What changed
The operator ran a bill audit, then two parallel fixes.
Split delivery from supply. Understanding your commercial utility bill walks through the line items. Rate 30 bills distribution at $14.22 per kW, ESI at $3.78 per kW, and transmission at $12.84 per kW above a 2 kW threshold [eversource-ct-rates-2026]. LED and RTU tune-up through EnergizeCT. The Energy Opportunities program offers incentives up to 40% of installed cost for LED lighting, HVAC, and controls in existing business facilities [energizect-energy-opportunities]. Replacing 32 display fixtures and scheduling the RTU economizer cut peak demand from 55 kW to 46 kW in the first summer after completion.
Fixed supplier contract before January reset. Standard Service resets January 1 and July 1 [energizect-rate-board-business]. The operator compared Rate Board supplier offers filed under PURA Docket 06-10-22 [energizect-rate-board-business] and signed a 24-month fixed generation contract at 10.1 cents per kWh with consolidated Eversource billing [ct-pura-choose-supplier].
Lease confirmation on meter ownership. The landlord confirmed the dispensary owns its sub-panel. A neighboring tenant's load was on a separate account, avoiding enrollment delays.
The math after
Compare the modeled baseline to the post-audit stack over 156,000 kWh a year.

Delivery savings from peak reduction: about $3,200 a year. Supply savings from the fixed contract: about $1,700 a year against the modeled Standard Service line. Together, roughly $5,600 a year.
On a per-store basis, that is meaningful for a single location. For an operator planning three more Connecticut stores, the same audit template scales if each site stays on Rate 30 under 200 kW peak [eversource-ct-rates-2026].
What did not work
Blaming high bills on customer traffic. kWh rose 8% in August while the bill rose 22%. Interval data showed peak demand up 6 kW from the RTU staging simultaneously with display lighting, not from longer store hours.
Switching supply without touching peak demand. The first supplier quote saved 0.9 cents per kWh on generation but left the 55 kW demand stack intact. Efficiency work ran in parallel after the audit.
Assuming UI territory rates apply. The operator's counsel briefly reviewed a Hartford location in Eversource territory and a New Haven site served by United Illuminating. UI Standard Service for July through December 2026 is 11.9022 cents per kWh on Rate GS, a different benchmark [energizect-rate-board-business]. Each utility requires its own comparison.
Delaying until Last Resort territory. Customers at or above 500 kW monthly demand take Last Resort Service, priced monthly [ct-pura-choose-supplier]. This store was nowhere near that threshold, but the flagship the operator eyed in a power center had a shared panel that could have pushed a combined load higher. The lease audit caught that before signing.
Small commercial demand thresholds on retail accounts
