That profile is flatter than a lighting square wave but spikier than a warehouse, and it lands on demand-metered tariffs at PSE&G LPL, JCP&L GP/GT, or Atlantic City Electric AGS once the lab exceeds small-commercial thresholds. Processors above the BGS-CIEP boundary face hourly default supply unless they sign with a Third Party Supplier, so batch scheduling around PJM peak hours is a bill strategy, not just a production habit.

The load profile of a New Jersey extraction lab
A processor's electric load is batch-driven, not schedule-driven like a grow's lighting clock.
Chillers and cold traps. Ethanol and hydrocarbon recovery runs cycle compressors on and off. A single -40 C chiller can draw 50 to 150 kW while starting, then settle lower. Multiple units starting together create the month's peak if nothing else is running.
Vacuum ovens and decarb. Ovens hold temperature for 24 to 72 hours at 5 to 15 kW each. The load is flat but continuous, which helps load factor on a demand-metered tariff.
C1D1 ventilation. Explosion-proof exhaust fans run whenever solvent is present. They do not shut off for PJM peak hours unless production stops. Ventilation is often 20 to 40 percent of a lab's baseline kW.
Solvent recovery and distillation. Short-path and wiped-film skids add 10 to 40 kW during active runs. Scheduling distillation away from chiller start-up windows is the simplest peak-shaving tactic that does not touch product quality.
New Jersey's 859 cooling degree days mean summer ambient temperatures raise condenser head pressure on air-cooled chillers from June through September [noaa-cag-new-jersey]. BGS-RSCP fixed supply for small accounts runs 10.938 to 12.057 cents/kWh across the four EDCs for the 2026 auction tranche [nj-bpu-bgs-2026]. BGS-CIEP adds PJM real-time hourly energy plus a capacity charge of about $598 to $680 per MW-day [nj-bpu-bgs-2026]. A lab that can keep total demand under the RSCP threshold at its EDC keeps the fixed default; most multi-room hydrocarbon or ethanol facilities cannot.
Scheduling process loads around peaks
On BGS-CIEP, the supply line moves with PJM's real-time price every hour [nj-bpu-bgs-2026]. Shifting non-critical batch steps to evening or overnight hours reduces energy cost without changing monthly kWh much. Peak demand vs peak usage explains why the delivery demand charge follows a different clock: one 15-minute interval sets billed kW for the month.
Three rules for New Jersey labs:
- Never start every chiller at once if you can sequence recovery runs across rooms.
- Keep C1D1 ventilation on a separate panel so you can see how much of your peak is fixed vs discretionary.

A flatter load profile than a grow's lighting square wave is attractive to a Third Party Supplier on a fixed contract, because the supplier takes less shape risk. That is the opposite of a staggered grow, where the flatness is engineered. Labs get it from batch overlap.
A worked example: hydrocarbon lab, statewide average rate
Assume:
- PSE&G territory, LPL-Secondary, on BGS-CIEP.
- Two C1D1 rooms with 25 kW ventilation each running 16 hours a day: 50 kW baseline when solvent work is active.
- Three chillers averaging 80 kW during recovery runs, 8 hours a day, not all starting together: 640 kWh per day from chillers.
- Four vacuum ovens at 8 kW each, 24 hours: 768 kWh per day.
- Distillation skid 25 kW, 6 hours a day: 150 kWh per day.
- Lighting, lab HVAC, office: 40 kW average, 24 hours.
Monthly kWh roughly: chillers 19,200 + ovens 23,040 + distillation 4,500 + baseline 50 kW x 480 h = 24,000 + other 40 kW x 720 h = 28,800, total about 99,500 kWh. Peak demand assume 50 + 80 + 32 + 25 + 45 = 232 kW on a recovery afternoon, still under 500 kW so this lab could theoretically stay on BGS-RSCP if class placement allows [pseg-electric-tariffs]. A larger facility with four chillers and distillation overlapping pushes past 500 kW and onto CIEP.
At 18.47 cents per kWh [eia-epm-5-6-a], 99,500 kWh costs about $18,400 per month supply-weighted. Delivery demand and CIEP capacity would add on top for a larger account. At the industrial average of 15.65 cents [eia-epm-5-6-a], the same kWh costs $15,600.
Vertical integration and the New Jersey market
397 cannabis businesses were licensed to operate under the CREAMM Act as of December 17, 2025, with retailers the largest operating share [nj-crc-2025-year-in-review]. Many operators hold both Class 1 and Class 2 licenses or run microbusinesses that cultivate and process under one roof [nj-crc-businesses]. Does the CRC set energy rules for extraction labs?
The CRC's energy-related requirements target cultivation operations, not stand-alone Class 2 manufacturers. A processor without canopy follows standard commercial building and fire codes. A microbusiness or vertically integrated operator that both grows and extracts should separate grow and lab loads on submeters if you want clean data for procurement or future reporting.
Is a New Jersey lab always on BGS-CIEP?
Only if it exceeds the small and medium commercial threshold at its EDC. A compact hydrocarbon lab under 500 kW on PSE&G LPL-Secondary stays on fixed BGS-RSCP. What delivery class does a typical NJ processor use?
JCP&L bills small labs on General Service Secondary and moves larger demand-metered loads to GP or GT with per-kW charges. PSE&G uses GLP for small accounts and LPL-Secondary or LPL-Primary for larger ones. Atlantic City Electric uses MGS-Secondary for small loads and AGS with a 12-month ratchet for larger annual general service accounts.
